An hour later, we’re sitting in my truck in the parking lot of the shelter, quiet and exhausted. And even though I didn’t do much in the grand scheme of things today, I actually did something for someone else besides throwing money at them. I got to know some of these people that few ever take the time to know. They’re good people who could care less what I do for a living or how I’ve fallen from grace so many times I’ve lost count. Before I know it, a smile spreads slowly across my face, and this unexpected and overwhelming sense of joy washes over me. I know this won’t be my first and last time here. Nah, they’re about to get real sick of Delaware King.

“Thank you for letting me come with you today.” I break the silence and glance over at Zo, who is wearing an identical smile. Her eyes are gleaming.

“I’m pretty sure you barged your way in. There was no ‘letting you’ do anything. But you’re welcome. It was…nice, having you here.”

“Just nice?”

“Maybe slightly more, but that’s all you’re getting.”

“Fair enough. You hungry?”

“Starved!”

“All right then, I’m cooking you dinner.” I announce and not a second later, uproarious laughter fills the front cab of my truck. I should feel insulted, but Zoey has the greatest laugh you have heard—loud and uninhibited, but not at all obnoxious. It’s endearing and irresistible. The right corner of my mouth lifts and I shake my head in amusement. “You laugh now, but just you wait, Zoey Washington. I’m about to blow your fucking mind, girl.”
